Two friends of mine were involved in bicycle collisions last year (one with a car, one with group of Boy Scouts who ran us off the bike path).  Both were wearing helmets, thank goodness.  As a child, I didn't wear a bike helmet.  Did they even make them in the 1970s?  Now, at the age of 43, I have been cycling for the past 3 years - and I ALWAYS wear my bike helmet.  With the conditions of roads these days, and the way people drive, you never know.  Plus, you might hit a stone, rock, or something in your path that will throw you off balance and cause you to fall.
