Gene and Heather have created a unique business at South River Vineyard and they should be very proud of what they have accomplished! However, not too long ago they were a 'start-up' as well. They had a huge advantage over most new wineries! Gene worked for one of the largest Ohio wineries (Debonne Vineyards)! As such he had support from Tony in the form of manpower, machinery and knowledge he acquired while on the job! Yes, growing grapes and making wine are 'a rich man's business' but there is also a passion that drives people to want to make the grape and wine business succeed in Ohio! The solution to having a shortage of grapes....PLANT MORE GRAPES! As far as the recession goes, I don't believe that any single business/industry can single handedly stop it. But as my Mom always said... Every penny counts! I dont see any gain in slamming the local industry support such as the Ohio Wine Producers and other wineries in the area. I am having a hard time seeing Mr. Sigels point of view how these new startups are not going to help the local economy. They create, jobs, tax dollars, entertainement, lodging and tourism dollars. Such comments from an economist seems absurd.
