The French-Canadians were shamed into abandoning their language, as if being bilingual was something to be ashamed of. Even today, many people still think that speaking any language other than English makes a person suspect.  A professor at CCC has an opinion that something dramatic in the early 20th century caused the assimiliation process to speed up.  He thinks that the Ku Klux Klan might have been involved.
