They don't care about the defendants - they care about the $$$$$. Why would anyone even question searching someone going into a jail? A search is necessary to prevent weapons, drugs, etc and to protect the people working there. If the person smuggles in drugs and overdoses, then the huge settlement is against the jail and the public is outraged the officers didn't find it - stop allowing the courts to tie the hands of the officers and put them at risk. What would really be the point of jail or prison if it was like going home where you can do whatever you want. I do agree that in that case, a female officer, even if she had to be called in from the state police, should have done the strip search, just like men should perform strip searches on only males. But as for the stripsearch itself, I think it is very nessessary to the safety of the jail itself.
